Westgate honors those who came before at Jonas Henderson Relays

The annual Westgate High School track and field meet had a different look and feel to it this year as the Tiger Relays were officially renamed the Jonas Henderson Relays, honoring the legacy of New Iberia’s segregation-era Black school that eventually became the Westgate campus.
Head track and field coach Randall Antoine said the name change was a project that he had been eyeing for a while as a way to connect the past with the present at Westgate.
“We’re always looking for community involvement, just trying to tie everything together. I’m a big proponent of the idea that in order to get to where you’re trying to go or have a productive future, you have to know where you come from.”
The event began with a playing of the National Anthem and Lift Every Voice and Sing by Westgate student Kaitlin Absent as well as a recognition of all Jonas Henderson alumni in attendance.
The event featured several of the top schools in the state, something Antoine said is reflective of the talent Westgate has on its roster.
“Some schools had early proms and other ones had scheduling issues with baseball and stuff, but we have teams from all across Louisiana here. We have great relationships with most of the teams in the state, so these events are all about showcasing the kids and giving them a platform where they can display their talents.
The Tigers took home top honors at the event with several first place finishes. Senior Davian Jackson claimed gold in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and in the 4×100-meter relay.
