Iberia Parish said yes to the three tax propositions on the ballot Saturday night that will go toward local fire departments and the Iberia Parish Library.

A bid from the Iberia Parish Library System to renew its 4.50 mills property tax and main source of revenue just barely passed by 88 votes when the polls closed. The final tally showed 4,480 voters showing up in the affirmative and 4,392 who voted against the measure.

The proposition guarantees the library system an estimated revenue of $2.7 million annually, which allows the system to maintain its various libraries throughout Iberia Parish and the programs put on throughout the year.

A new tax proposal from Iberia Fire District No. 1 passed much less closely, with 63% of voters showing up to support the measure.

The 3.50 mills will apply to all Iberia Parish residents and be used by the fire district to maintain its equipment and buildings. By the time the polls closed, 2,882 voted in favor of the proposition and 1,661 voted against.

Finally, a sales tax applicable to New Iberia residents alone was passed for the New Iberia Fire Department, with 53% New Iberia residents voting in support of the proposition.

The quarter-cent sales tax will be used strictly for personnel salaries of the New Iberia Fire Department. There were 1,861 voters who supported the measure while 1,650 were against it.

The enthusiasm for local taxes did not pan out for the four state propositions on the ballot, however. Voters across the state resoundingly voted against the state amendments. Locally, only one of the four propositions had support in Iberia.

A proposition to provide for disciplinary proceedings over attorneys and to create courts of limited jurisdiction failed in Iberia, with 51% of voters showing up against the measure.

Another amendment that would have authorized the Legislature to determine which felony crimes committed by juveniles may be transferred for criminal prosecution as an adult failed with 53% of Iberia voters against it.

An amendment to  provide for the use of the earliest election date to fill judicial vacancies also proved controversial, with the measure failing 51-49%.

The most contentious proposition of the night, an amendment that would have allowed the Legislature to lower the maximum rate of income tax, increase income tax deductions for citizens over 65 and provide for a government growth limit along with several other allowances just barely passed in Iberia Parish with 51% approval.
