West St. Mary senior Garylon Brown was named to the LSWA Class 2A honorable mention all-state team earlier this month.
Brown averaged more than 30 points per game for the Wolfpack, which easily surpassed the scoring of any player on the first or second team.
“It was alright,” said the modest guard, who tallied an incredible 14 steals per game along with eight rebounds and seven assists. “I tried to make it more. We all tried to hype our team up. At the end of the day, we tried.”
WSM (15-12) dominated District 7-2A competition, going 8-0 with wins by scores such as 46-6 and 45-13. Its closest 7-2A contest, a 12-point win over Houma Christian, was followed by a 47-22 win in the second round of league play.
The No. 12-seeded Wolfpack won its first playoff game vs. No. 21 Jonesboro-Hodge before falling in the regional round at No. 5 Midland, which lost by four points to top-seeded champion Lakeview in the Division IV nonselect semifinals and took powerhouse Lafayette Christian to overtime.
“We were trying to make it to state but Midland was good,” said Brown, who scored a season-high of 49 points in a win over Patterson.
A prolific scorer her entire career with more than 2,000 points, Brown had to shoulder even more of the load after former teammate and LSU-Alexandria recruit Kaitlyn Blake transferred to Zachary High, which won the Division I nonselect state title.
“That would’ve made a big difference.” Brown said. “We were like sisters.”
Brown, who was named district MVP, turned down out of state scholarship offers and plans to walk-on at Southern University where she will study business management and kinesiology.
She plans to return to the Baldwin area upon graduation and open her own gym.
“The community here helped me,” she said. “I want to give local kids exposure for sports and keep them off the streets.”
Brown has been shuffling back and forth between Lafayette and the West St. Mary Civic Center, keeping her skills sharp in pick-up games against mostly male players.
“I grew up with a lot of boys,” she said. “That’s what makes me so aggressive on the court.”
Her favorite subject is social studies, particularly history classes. In her spare time, Brown is an entrepreneur – selling shoes and other gear.
