The New Iberia Garden Club recently assisted in a Li’l Brooklyn Project on Rosier Street at the residence of Cheyenne and Tripp Wright.
Members removed old plants, shrubs, and weeds from the front of their home. The soil was cultivated and conditioned and members planted yaupon, dianthus’, and Japanese Magnolia trees. Mulch and a steel border was added as a final touch.
The project was spearheaded by Darnelle Delcambre and Ruth Boutte.
The mission and purpose of the Lil’Brooklyn Neighborhood Initiative was to revitalize the neighborhood to make it more attractive and prosperous. It started with planting trees, painting homes and improving their park, according to co-organizer, Anne Darrah.
Over the past four years, hundreds of trees and bushes have been planted including Lil’Brooklyn Park on Johnson Alley. Hundreds of volunteers have helped this project succeed. Ms. Darrah stated the revitalization has led to new home ownership, new friendships, and even two successful AirBnB’s.
